FIRST AGE TOTAL WAR

            Imp

            Kingdom of Hithlum

            Imp
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------
Now rumour came to the camp in Hithlum of the march of Fingolfin and those that followed him, who had crossed the Grinding Ice, and all the world lay then in wonder at the coming of the Moon. But as the host of Fingolfin marched into Mithrim the Sun rose flaming in the West; and Fingolfin unfurled his blue and silver banners, and blew his horns, and flowers sprang beneath his marching feet, and the ages of the starts were ended. At the uprising of the great light the servants of Morgoth fled into Angband, and Fingolfin passed unopposed through the fastness of Dor Daedeloth while his foes hid beneath the earth. Then the Elves smote upon the gates of Angband, and the challenge of their trumpets shook the towers of Thangorodrim; and Maedhros heard them amid his torment and cried aloud, but his voice was lost in the echoes of the stone.

But Fingolfin, being of other temper than F?anor, and wary of the wiles of Morgoth, withdrew from Dor Daedeloth and turned back towards Mithrim, for he had heard tidings that there he should find the sons of F?anor, and he desired also to have the shield of the Mountains of Shadow while his people rested and grew strong; for he had seen the strength of Angband and thought not that it would fall to the sound of trumpets only. Therefor coming at length to Hithlum he made his first camp and dwelling by the northern shores Lake Mithrim.

The Silmarillion, Chapter 13 - Of the Return of the Noldor

            Imp

Fingolfin and his son Fingon held Hithlum, and the most part of Fingolfin's folk dwelt in Mithrim about the shores of the great lake; to Fingon was assigned Dor-L?min, that lay to the west of the mountains of Mithrim. But their chief fortress was at Eithel Sirion in the east of Ered Wethrin whence they kept watch upon Ard-galen; and their cavalry rode upon that plain even to the shadow of Thangorodrim, for from few their horses had increased swiftly, and the grass of Ard-galen was rich and green. If those horses many of the sires came from Valinor, and they were given to Fingolfin by Maedhros in atonement of his losses, for they had been carried by ship to Losgar.

The Silmarillion, chapter 14 - Of Beleriand and its Realms

            -----------------------------------------------

            Imp

The most densely populated and strongest of the Noldo kingdoms, the High King of the Noldor in Middle Earth ever keeps his watchful gaze upon the plains of Ard-galen for any signs of an attack from Thangorodrim. The mountains of Ered Wethrin and the great cold wastes of the northern reaches of the kingdom protect the populated areas to the south. While mostly Noldor live here, a great deal of Atani, humans, live here as well. These men of Hador L?rindol's house (the great grandson of Marach) were closely related to the men of B?or's house and they were steadfast in their loyalty to the lords of the Noldor.

The High King rules over all Noldor, yet many of the sons of F?anor's consider them kin and friends - yet do not follow the house of Fingolfin willingly. Despite their political disputes and struggles, the House of F?anor and the House of Fingolfin both recognize that the true threat lies to the North and that any infighting between the Noldor would spell their doom. With every year the darkness grows and Morgoth is growing more bold for each passing year, testing the defenses of the Noldor more and more frequently. With increasing difficulty the Noldor hold the line and protect those who hide between their strongholds and mighty armies - will the High King drop his guard and let the onslaught of Angband's forces begin? Or will he turn the tide in the war and go on the offensive in an attempt to reclaim the Silmarils and defeat the Dark Lord? Only time will tell.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------

            Royal Dynasty of Hithlum

            Imp

"Then Fingolfin beheld (as it seemed to him) the utter ruin of the Noldor, and the defeat beyond redress of all their houses; and filled with wrath and despair he mounted Rochallor his great horse and rode forth alone, and none might restrain him. He passed over Dor-nu-Fauglith like a wind amid the dust, and all that beheld his onset fled in amaze, thinking Orom? himself was come; for a great madness of rage was upon him, so that his eyes shone like the eyes of the Valar. Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came."- The Silmarillion, p. 153

The name Fingolfin is a Sindarin form of his name from Valinor. There he was called by his Quenya name Nolofinw?, or "wise Finw?".

            Imp

"His valour was as a fire yet steadfast as the hills of stone; wise he was and skilled in voice and hand; troth and justice he loved and bore goodwill to all, both Elves and Men, hating Morgoth only; he sought not his own, neither power nor glory, and death was his reward." -The Lost Road (History of Middle-earth Vol. 5)

Fingon's name was a Sindarin translation of the Quenya name Findek?no which translates to "Skilled hero". To put a matter to rest: Earlier versions of the Silmarillion stated that Fingon had one son, Ereinion Gil-Galad which was changed later by Christopher Tolkien, in current (edited) versions of the book Fingon has no children.

The Armies of the High King and their Regiments

            -----------------------------------------------

            Noldor Militia
            Imp

Drafted from the peasantry and lower commoners of the Noldo peoples, these men serve mainly as a police force and night watch in the towns of the Noldor. Armed with a shield or buckler and an axe. These men cannot be considered officially a part of the Army and are rarely called upon - save the greatest need - to aid the army in the field of battle.

            Steppe Ranger
            Imp

These cloaked hunters of the Noldor are very lightly armed but make up for it in speed and skill. These men serve as trackers and scouts in the Army but also hunters of great beasts that the regular army cannot assail. Armed with a longbow and helmet, these men guard the great plains and steppes of their Realm from all and any incursions. While the main army focuses its defense on the mountains of Ered Wethrin, these archers are charged to defend the heart of the kingdom.

It is not once that they have stopped invasions from the open fields of the north when Morgoth has sent armies and raiding parties into the heart of Hithlum.

            -----------------------------------------------

            Noldor Archer
            Imp

The exiles' return to Middle Earth came at the eleventh hour for the Sindar of Beleriand. With Morgoth assailing them on all fronts and all hope nearly gone, the Noldor arrived to the northern coasts of Middle Earth. Here they stumbled upon their long lost brethren who did not follow them to Valinor - but shortly thereafter Morgoth learned of their arrival and decided to assail the newly arrived people. The First battle known as Dagor-nuin-Giliath, the battle of the stars, was won to a great deal by the deadly archers of the Noldor.

These soldiers, armed with strong longbows, chainmail and helmets of fine elven making - have always been a thorn in Morgoth's side. Many of these archers have trained for the most part of their lives at archery and their skill is unparallelled when comparing themselves to other races. Only the N?menoreans in ages later could boast with nearly equal skill but even then they were not the better marksmen. The skill of the Noldor with bow and arrow would remain legendary among all the races of Middle Earth until the end of times. In ages later, the d?nedain of Gondor would say that a man who was exceptionally good at archery probably had some elven blood flowing through his veins - and for some this would be true.

            Steppe Guardian
            Imp

In addition to the Steppe Rangers, Hithlum's armies have regiments of Steppe Guardians who are unlike their ranger brethren swordsmen who excel at ambush and fast battlefield maneouvers. Armed with hooded cloaks, shield, sword and chain mail - these warriors move quickly and quietly across the battlefield and strike at their enemies at the worst possible moment to inflict maximum effect. The Kings of Hithlum understood early in their kingdoms' youth that these men would become essential to the defense of the kingdom.

            Noldor Man-at-arms
            Imp

Composing the bulk of the Noldo infantry, these footmen are the core of the armies of Hithlum. Men over the age of thirty are consrcipted for but five years and then released from service of the King's armies, only called upon to serve again in times of war. These elves are armed with chainmail, shield and sword as well as a finely crafted helmet. While not only elves served in the armies of Hithlum - but many Men as well - the elves were more skilled than their younger brothers and feared not the enemy for many of these warriors still remembered the Light of the Trees in Valinor.

            Noldor Spearman
            Imp

Together with the Men-at-arms of their realm, the spearmen of the High King's armies are an invaluable line of defense against the hordes of Morgoth. These men can lock their shields and present their steel covered tips against the charging enemy, impaling them long before they can do any real harm to the armies of the King. Men over the age of thirty are consrcipted for but five years and then released from service, only called upon to serve again in times of war. These elves are armed with chainmail, shield and spear as well as a finely crafted helmet.

            Noldor Riders
            Imp

The armies of the High King are composed somewhat differently than that of other Noldo nations. They employ several cavalry regiments whose horses are those of Valinor's breed. These men are conscripted for a period of five years before being released from their service, but few who join the cavalry regiments of Hithlum get to rejoice their completed military service for long - as Morgoth often sends raiding parties from the North and force the King to reactivate veterans into the service as riders to drive them off. As a result, many of those who join the king's army as Riders do not return or expect long lives, but their sacrifice is honoured by their people and they are held in high regard throughout the Kingdom.

            Swiftwings of Hithlum
            Imp

Many of the regiments of the Hithlum cavalry regiments specialize in firing arrows from horseback. These would often ride up in front of the enemy, harass them, cut off their supply lines and incite them to making a premature attack. Many a times have Morgoth's warbands been broken up long before they became a significant threat thanks to these skilled riders.

Armed very lightly, these riders always knew that staying out of the fray of battle was crucial to their usefulness on the battlefield - however this had sometimes negative effects on their reputation. These archers, although incredibly skilled, were often laughed at by their fellow riders in the armies of Hithlum for cowardice on the field of battle. Although any such talk was strictly shut down by officers in the army, the bad reputation continued to spread until the regiments became something of a small joke amongst the infantrymen.

"There's not one warrior who flees battle faster than the Swiftwings of our armies" soldiers would say. The commanders and generals of the High King's armies knew however that the Noldor would not long stand without the aid and skill of these mounted warriors who wielded beautiful bows, and long they remained in favour of the King. In ages later, the Noldor would remember these warriors with reverence and would form new regiments of mounted archers in their younger kingdoms.

            Blacksky Riders
            Imp

Unlike their lightly armored Swiftwing brethren, the heavily armed cavalry archers of Hithlum had longbows instead of shortbows at their disposal. Where others would be forced to dismount from their steed to fire their volleys, these elves would shoot their rains of death and destruction from horseback, often flying past their enemy at blazing speeds. They were given the name Blacksky Riders by their Atani friends and brothers, for they would often blacken the sky with their volley of piercing death and leave few survivors in their rain of death.

Often the orcs of Thangorodrim would see but a darkening of the sky and a few moments later they would lay dead. These riders were part of the professional army and not a part of the conscripted regiments of the High King, as such they did not live with the common folk of Hithlum but lived secluded lives in their military camps for a great part of their lives.

            Mithrim Lancers
            Imp

The nobles of Hithlum were plentiful in number and proud of their heritage. To aid their king they provided horses of noble breed, heavy armor and long lances. These lancers would charge with their full might into the lines of the enemy, often shattering entire lines or even batallions of orcs. Few could match them in skill of arms on horseback, but their heavy armor would also make them unsuitable for pursuits across the battlefield. Honoured by their friends and respected by their foes, these riders are a force on the battlefield to be feared.

            Noldor Guard
            Imp

These kinslayers are among the best warriors of the world. These guardsmen serve as bodyguards, shock troops and even advisors to the Royal Court. The Noldor Guard were first established by F?anor when the exiles landed on the shores of Beleriand. These men excel at melee combat and are taken from the nobility of the Noldo society. Blessed by the strength of their youth that was spent in the Blessed Lands, these men charge at their enemies with fire in their eyes which shines like the Trees of Ages past. Strong in arms and armed with the best that the Noldor have to offer, they are honoured by their peers and feared by their enemies.

              Avari Hunters
Under the gaze of Eru, his children live in both great cities and wild forests. It is the latter to which the hunters are familiar, and they are masters of stealth and archery for both are needed to hunt in the wild. On occasion they hunt other beasts as well, foul beasts unleashed upon Middle Earth by Melkor, or a stray band of orcs, yet these lightly armoured archers are meant for scouting and hunting, not combat between great armies.

From the ranks of the hunters among the Avari, few are chosen to be counted among their scouts. These veteran archers are more heavily armoured with padded leather, and due to their experience can fire a bow more quickly than other of their kin. These men are masters of their craft, no trail in the forest and no beast wanders in the woods without the Avari scouts knowing about it.

The Shadowrangers are better equipped than most Avari archers, wearing padded leather and some plate armor even in a good combination to maximize protection and mobility. These men are armed with smaller but much more powerful shortbows and scimitars to help them fight in melee. Once the shadowranger sets his eyes on a target in the wild, there is no escaping him.

Skilled young men among the Avari join the ranks of the Forest Warriors, while inexperienced and many times charging rashly into the enemy ranks - these warriors are still an asset to the hosts of the Avari as they are skilled combatants. Armed in leather armor, plate helmet, sword and shield these men's favourite tactic is to ambush their enemies as they march in the thick forests. Due to their natural affinity for nature and the forests, these men can move swiftly across the battlefield - no matter the terrain.

              General's bodyguard
Taken from the core of veterans in the Avari hosts, these men have sworn an oath to lay down their lives for their leaders. Armed with long pikes and heavy armor, their steel spears can pierce the armor of any foe. Few in numbers, they make up for it with skill and their fine equipment and are a necessary addition to any Avari host.
