Voltaire's Nightmare turns the Holy Roman Empire into a world-sized experience. With Central Europe expanded to more than 2000 provinces and 600 countries, the scale of the Empire feels tangible, and the task of uniting it more than a small diplomatic challenge.
At game start, the Empire consists of 368 states, 74 Free Cities, 3 Confederations (The Hanseatic League, the Decapole, and the Swiss Confederacy), 7 electors, and Emperor Friedrich of Styria - regent to the thrones of Austria and Tirol
Flavor events allow for rapid historical expansion, but be wary of invasions from foreign powers like the Ottomans or Hungarians. Special decisions variously let you declare an Anti-Papacy, enlist a Holy Order to fight under your banner, or form dozens of new states, including:
-Lotharingia
-Swabia
-Franconia
-Lombardy
-The Austrian Empire
-The Kingdom of God
-The North German Confederation
-The South German Confederation
-Ducal Prussia
-The Roman Empire
and more. Many areas have been split up into historical constituents, allowing you to unite de-jure duchies like Pomerania, Friesland, Bavaria, or Alsace as a smaller state.
The Reformation has been expanded into four waves - Lutheranism, Anabaptism, Zwinglianism, and Calvinism, each allowing centers of reformation and using Protestant mechanics. Meanwhile, the starting map features the Waldensian heresy with a unique Patron Saint system and the Czech Hussites, who can select a secondary religion.
Government Ranks have been increased to 6: County, Margraviate, Duchy, Principality, Kingdom, and Empire
New government types include Swiss 'Cantons', Italian monarchies with a Guelph/Ghibelline faction system, and Abbacies distinct from Bishoprics
Central Europe now has over 80 cultures spanning 15 groups, based on Linguistic divisions, as well as dozens of new Trade Nodes starting in the Mediterranean and ending at the rich Northern trade ports
Though many New World and Asian trade goods have been removed, an equal amount have been added to enrich the flavor of European trade, including metals like Silver and Tin or luxury goods like Amber and Books
Trade Companies are present as well, allowing you to establish rich trade empires in Italy or the Balkan coast
New Idea Sets further develop the Empire's flavor, including Turkish and Frisian piracy, while irrelevant default idea groups like Exploration have been reimagined to deal with more general affairs.
The core EU4 gameplay is preserved as best as possible, though various balance tweaks have been added to facilitate large-scale HRE gameplay. HRE territory no longer carries an Aggresive Expansion bonus, unit movement speeds have been greatly increased, and the Emperor can only demand Unlawful Territory from his rivals
At the core, this mod allows you to step into the shoes of one of hundreds of historical dynasties or states and race to unite your homeland into a 19th-Century absolutist state like Germany or Italy. Enjoy the flavor events and powerful ideas of historical winners like Brandenburg and Austria, or go for the ahistorical and absurd by forming the Roman Empire as Loon or Orange County.
CREDITS/NOTES:
99% of mod work was done by the author. Advice and bug reporting were contrubuted from friends and will obviously need to be continued by the public.
Descriptions and GFX for most of the new Trade Goods are tentatively borrowed from the famous MEIOU&Taxes mod, as well as the GFX for Government Ranks and some Religious Rebel flags.
As things stand, the only available language is English aside from some perfunctory work on the German localization. If anybody wants to translate the root localization file into German/Spanish/French it would be much appreciated.
Due to the scale of the mod the only supported start date is the default 11 November, 1444, though if there is high demand for expansion this could be widened.
This is the first release build, expect minor bugs and report anything if you are willing.
The mod runs slower than vanilla but is far from unplayable even on a Mac laptop. The slowest it gets is during the Religious Leage War when potentially hundreds of nations are fighting at once.
All DLCs are recommended, though obviously things like Conquest of Paradise are less necessary while the DLCs that add Religious Leagues, Theocratic mechanics, and Government Ranks are strongly suggested.
