A composite bow of the same shape but longer (1.47 m, 58 in) has been found at Yrzi, in a Parthian grave dated between the 2nd century B. C. and the 3rd century A. D. (Brown 1937 ).
Distance covered by the arrow during discharge, and energy acquired,
The bracing height of the Scythian bow has been seen to be about 20 cm (8 in). Assuming that an arrow 60 cm long is drawn until the head projects 2 cm boyond the bow, the arrow will be in contact with the string during the discharge for about 58 - 20 = 38 cm (15 in).
The bracing height of the Persian bow was about 23 cm, (9 in), and the length of the draw will have been decided either by the length of the arrow, about 76 cm (30 in) or by the length of the, rood portion to which a foreshaft may have been attached, - perhaps about 66 cn, (26 in).Thus the acceleration distance will have been either out 76 -2- 23 = 51 on,, (20 in) or about 10 cm, (4 in) less.

Combining these figuros with those for the critical ckling force in, section 2-3.3, and the factor of 2/3 suggested in section 3.4.21 we should predict that the maximum kinetic energy on release from the Scythian bow would lie between
U0= 2/3 x 0.38 x 72J = 18 J
U0= 2/3 x 0.38 x 142 J = 36 J.
Taking the longer draw distance, the Persian bow should give a maximum between
2/3 x 0,51 x 71 J= 24J
Uo = 2/3 x 0.51 x 154 J= 52 J

Сomparison with later arrows.
Unless we take the, highest possible figures, which are unlikely, the energy of the ancient arrows appears low in
comparison with both the English longbow and the Turkish composite. Using a modern longbow with a maximum draw force
of 75 lbf (. 40 N) a skilled archer can give an arrow weighing 50 g an initial kinetic energy of about 50 J, and
mediaeval archers may have done considerably better (Pratt in Hardy 191-6 p 203). The Turkish bows used for flight shooting scem to heie had a similar draw-weight, and to have given a similar energy to -arrows weighing about 12.5 g
(Note 12).
12* Arrow weightst Klopsteg 1947, P 84. -. Energy calculated from range of 400 yards and assumed ballistic constant C0=
implying a velocity of about 90 ms. Ingo Simon, who achieved a shot of 460 yards with a Turkish bow in 1913, is reported to have said that he had never handled a Turkish bow with a draw weight greater than 80 lb, (360 N).
Putting these factors together, estimates which give the arrows between one half and two thirds the energy achieved
by later archers appear reasonable. The energy is also likely to have been much less than that of the heavy arrows
shot from longbows by the Carduchi, which Xenophon records as going through both shield and corselet (Anabasis IV I& 2).
2.? Conclusions.
While it cannot be said that our understanding of the archery of the Persian army is secure, the general picture
seems to be as follows:.
1. Many of tho troops were carrying the 'Scythian' type bow with a short draw distance, designed to achieve a
considerable range with a light arrow. The initial energy of these arrows was low, and their rate of loss was high. At
a range of 50 m, the energy may have been about 20 J, falling to about 15 J at 100 m and 9J at 200 m, if they could roach the last distance.
2. A smaller numbor, but including all the infantry described by Herodotus as Persians, and the Immortals and perhaps the Medes carried a longer bow with a greater draw- distance. Initial energy may have been up to 35 J, and the arrows were probably heavier. Energy on striking may have been up to 30 J at 50 m, 26 J at 100 921 20 J at 200 m.
3. Most of the heads ware of the flesh-cutting type, and liable to bend on hitting armour. There were however pyramidal
heads which were strong enough to pierce leather, wood, or bronze plate if they had sufficient energy and if the maximum
force during the impact did not exceed about 1200 N (270 lbf) at the point where the head joins the shaft. In order to
perforate, the heads would need to make a hole of minimum
diameter between 7 mm and 9 mm.
4. Comparing the estimates in this chapter with those given in chapter 1, we observe that the Persian arrows may
have had much the same energy as tho Greek spears, the Scythian arrows about two-thirds that. When attacking the helmet, the critical size of hole which would allow a spear to cause a serious wound was estimated as equivalent to a symmetrical hole of minimum diameter 10 mm, which is greater than that of the holo required by the arrowhead by about a quarter. When attacking a shield or cuirass, the spear must pass right through, and the hole was estimated as having
an equivalent diameter of 20 mm, which is about 2-1f times greater than that of the arrow. So a Persian arrow fitted with such a head should have some advantage over the spear, even though its energy is low by Mediaeval standards. How
great the advantage would be depends on the way in which the work of perforation varies with projectile diameter.
