Регулярная пехота Газневидов включает несметное число народов, живущих под их властью. Большинство из них -- восточные иранцы, они составляют большую часть воинов султана, есть также тюрки, таджики, мусульмане-индусы Синда и Пенджаба, афганцы, курды и арабы. Как и принято у Газневидов, они снабжены броней, хотя какого-то единого стиля в выборе защиты не существует. Как правило на регулярных копьеносцах Газни можно было увидеть чешуйчатый доспех, либо ламелляр, кольчугу или кожу. Стиль боя копьеносцев Газни соответствует древней традиции времен Александра Македонского("Искандер" на востоке). Их копья короче сарисс, и они не формируют стену щитов как фалангиты, но действуют как быстрые копьеносцы -- гипасписты, сила поддержки конницы. Многие из пехотинцев родились в Дейлеме, не имея традиционных метательных копий, но обладая неизменно высоким боевым духом, регулярные копейщики служат хребтом пехоты Газни. Они не обучены как Гулямы, и их оружие не из Маргианского железа, но эти копьеносцы обладают упорством и энергией, что делает их весьма ценными солдатами, и служит напоминанием, что Хорасан -- это не только родина прекрасных лошадей, но и воинственного народа копейщиков, лучников и кавалеристов.

Теперь полководец может позволить даже стрелкам, традиционно удаленным от боевой линии, сойтись при необходимости в рукопашной с булавой и щитом, немного поработав легко-средней пехотой. Обычное возвращение к практике прошлых лет позволило Газневидам подмять под себя весь Афганистан, набрать там новых бесстрашных воинов и совершить походы в Иран и Индию.

Они способны легко отразить туркменскую легкую конницу без большого ущерба для себя, или сражаться на равных со средней конницей, предварительно ослабив противника стрельбой из лука.

There was no general pressure for these men to convert and so many of them remained christian for as long as a century. They seem to be lacking in equipment but this is a treacherous impression. Most of these warriors wear leather cuirasses under their colourful dress, which they adopted from Balkanic warriors, such as their light curved shields. Yet their most outstanding quality which they share with the janissaries is their very high morale, which causes them to charge again and again. This unit will only retreat if the battle is already lost. They formed the core of the Ottoman army, and at their strongest numbered some 90 000 men across the Empire.

But, whereas the famous janissaries are chosen from amongst the worse recruits, the best will go to serve in the kapikulu cavalry. They were given a better education than the janissaries in addition to the superb military training they also received. Many of the recruits went on to become administrators and viziers. Thus for some poverty-stricken families the notion of a boy being taking in by the devshirme was not as grim as may be imagined. There were six cavalry regiments, the largest of which were the sipahis, a name which later came to describe nearly all Ottoman cavalry. They are superbly equipped and possess an amazing esprit de corps, they are the Sultan's most trusted warriors and will fight any enemy.

They were originally a unit in the reign of ar-Rashidun Khuluf (the four righteous Caliphs) that never were dispersed, the same soldiers and their sons remained part of the regiment for many generations. The troops were known for wearing yellow turbans that distinguished them throughout their exploits. The Ansars were amazing on horseback, but mostly they fought on foot. In battle, they were equipped with spear, bow, javelins, sword, and axe, making them a formidable and inexhaustible source of shock troops. Now, after the splintering of the Umma, the Ansars have dissipated. Many have ended up in the service of the Imam, and have taken up sword to help him. Armed with their father?s armor, yellow turbaned helmet, and heavy mail they represent an older regime. Now, however, they have been fitted with the famed Kattara and heavy Indian shields, the best weapons available. Soon, perhaps, the Ansars will become another great power, this time under another banner.

Aceh was the first nation in South East Asia to convert to Islam, which was brought by the many Omani and Persian traders. In fact, the principle city of ?Banda Aceh? was thought to be named for ?Bandar Makka? or ?Port to Mecca? in Persian, it was also nicknamed the ?veranda of Mecca?. The isle of Sumatra and the Indonesian archipelago is home to many warriors and fearsome and beautiful weaponry. The warriors of Aceh, armed with intricate meteor-metal tipped spears and expertly crafted shields, are masters in light combat and the Malay martial art, Silat. The spices are indeed sharp from this part of the isle, and these troops provide an exotic flavor to the armies of the Imam and are a testament to the power of the Sultan.

They do not live in savagery, but a rugged civilization etched from raw mountain stone and not rotted wood or soiled clay; building kingdoms to stand eye to eye with the great empires that come and go. Some have seen success, the Kingdoms of Armenia and Georgia standing as strong as any lowlands nation ever has, yet others struggle in division and tribal conflict: Their sovereignty shall linger past the rise and fall of kingdoms, but shall be consigned to be as distant stars in the night and hold not the ephermal ambition to challenge the sun./n/nThe Caucasus house a plethoria of people for whom history books and courtly intrigue hold no notice. These Turkish nomads arrived in the late 11th and 12th centuries, settling primarily to the south of Kiev and Pereiaslav./n/nWith their widespread service as cavalry mercenaries for the feuding Rus Princes, the Karakalpak have come into a bountiful wealth unavailable to most of their rugged steppe kin. Their war-dress is mixture of Russian and Turkic Fashions, the latter of which already was beholden to a wide variety of influences from Germanic West to Turkic and Iranian East. With mail shirts, light round shield and adorned helmet and face mask, these nobles are potent medium horse archers able to get into the fray if they've softened up their enemies with sufficent archery.

In the loss of Greater Armenia to the Muslims and spread of the Turks within Anatolia Armenians were in a unique position to realize their ambitions, both in their own Sovereingty with the Cilician Kingdom of Armenia and in offering their martial skills to the wealth of new customers./n/nThe craggy terrain of Eastern Anatolia has long housed martially adept tribes with a preference for foot archer and javelineering in a guerilla style, a manner symbolized especially by the adept Armenians who have come to ply their services as mercenaries the Near East over. Their most frequent work has been in the employ of the Romans, the Crusaders, and the now fallen Fatimids, amongst whom the term "Archer" became a synonym for "Armenian". These minor nobility of whom ancestral fiefdoms were lost to the Seljuk invasions, Roman usurping, or are simply the second or third sons without an inheritance nor the wealth to afford a horse ply themselves as adept archers willing but not dedicated to fighting in close quarters as well. The abundance of employment has given them the ability to afford light mail hauberks and leather jerkins, making these mencapable enough in close quarters but far more valuable at a distance.

The sword and scepter by which the Shi'ite Caliphate held its dominion was by it's infantry, mostly sword, javelin, and spear wielding Sudanese Slave Warriors, and its cavalry, premier amongst them the Ajnad. Their ranks were highly varied, consisting of Maghrebis, Sudanese, Syrians, Egyptians, Armenians, some Ghulams and even some Europeans. In sharp contrast to the bow and mace oriented Ghulams of the Turkish dynasties, the Ajnad were recognized as medium to heavy cavalrymen specialized in the use of spear in the traditional Middle Eastern manner (Rather than the couched lance of the Latin Christians)./n/nSaladin's purges of Fatimid loyalists coupled with an increasing focus on Kurdish and Turkish Ghulam horsemen have left the ranks of the Ajnad to atrophy, being a shadow of a worth once commented to seem a reflection of the Crusading knights in armor and tactics. Consisting of Syrian, Egyptian, and Arab officers supported by Iqtas' (land grants in lieu of a regular wage), these provincial troops serve more as light cavalry of the Bedouin tradition than the solid horsemen borne from Khurasani and Byzantine influence on the Abbasids and Fatimids.

For the native dynasties of their own aristocracy or those of foreign lands, these free peoples, civil guardsmen and lordless soldiers stand as conscripts for the powers that be to recruit. Stoically, they will serve a foreign master but do so with a reservation absent when fighting for their country free and not their land as part of a greater whole. Their equipment reflects such a dubious martial role, being well-to-do in comparison to the arsenal of peoples less militant than the Georgians. The humblest of tribesmen, peasant, and farmer are willing and even wanting to take up spear and shield to join in war as their nomadic ancestors did nearly a Millennia ago. They fight as light spearmen, experienced only in tribal feuding and the occasional service to warlords along the Indus. As a result their place is best in light attack or defense, ill suited to the duty of true warriors who may stand up to cavalry and infantry who are their peers. Despite their shortcomings, they are as Shiva spoke: Men of sacrifice, of bravery, and of industry. Better and more experienced warriors exist for the Maliks of Sindh, yet through battles won and lost they will continue to stand and fight, their bravery in their willingness to stand against far greater foes and to sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

{punjab_javelinmen_descr}With a land so heavily invaded and settled as India, it's no surprise that the secret to a tribe's origin is well woven in a tapestry of a thousand different peoples over thousands of years. The Gakhars of the Punjab are one such design upon the woven canvas of India, and the strands that their image originates from are an uncertainty to all but the Gakhars themselves. They find their ancestry in the semi-mythological dynasty of the Kayanians, the rulers of Ancient Persia in the times of the Avesta and the Shahnameh. Prior to their arrival in the Punjab, it is believed that a son of a Kayanian ruler conquered a part of Tibet, and his descendants would rule and extend their dominion into the Kashmir region. With the arrival of Mahmud of Ghazni into Northern India, Gakhar Shah, a son of the ruler of this wayward Aryan Clan, would come into the services of Mahmud, and upon gaining possession of the Potohar Plateau, would remain there and give rise to the Gakhari tribe. Others dispute that the natives of the Punjab's Potohar Plateau gave rise to the Gakhar Clan. Whatever the case, the Punjabi traditions of aristocratic, agrarian warriors remain true for even the simplest of Gakhari tribesmen. Hearty from a industrious existence as farmers of the meager villages across the Punjab, these poorer Gakhari fight as fleet-footed skirmishers, wielding short stabbing spear along with their bamboo javelins. They are not without merits on the battlefield, but remain men of ill discipline, moral and abilities, useful as skirmishers and harassers, but little more. While one might argue the lack of armor in the Indian subcontinent is a help instead of a hindrance, their lack of protection and ill discipline forces them to behave as irregular skirmishers, eager enough for battle but lacking in commitment.

They claim their origins are not found in being converted Rajput Indians, nor Arabs having settled in the Punjab centuries ago, but rather as descendants of the sons of Qutb Shah, a ruler of Herat and General to Mahmud of Ghazni himself, as well as a Hashemite - a descendant to Muhammad's son-in-law Ali. It is said that Qutb Shah and six of his sons accompanied Mahmud to conquer parts of Afghanistan, the Punjabi and Sindh, and Northern India, and in recognition of their dedication and courage, Mahmud bestowed upon Qutb and his sons the honorary title of Awan, meaning helper. Their tribal history then holds that the six sons of Qutb settled amongst the land of the Punjab, marrying local women who converted to Islam and gave rise to a people of a strong martial tradition and bravery born from the blood of Qutb Shah. Having taken well to the role, these Jagirdar operate as medium horse archers, relying upon speed to see themselves clear of heavier foes, before turning upon their weakened enemy with vicious mace and parrying shield.
